| Synopsis |
| The
TV mini-series of two parts is a
tale of friendship and love, the
story of Rocco, a man who finds the
sense of life while fighting for
traditions and becoming a legend
in his town in the South of Italy.
Rocco's family has produced cheese
in the mountains of Calabria for
many generations. Suddenly, the European
Union wants to prohibit the cheese
production. Rocco fights back with
tenacity and stubbornness. On his
way, he encounters a mother whose
child suffers from cancer and even
a little romance... |
| First
episode |
| Rocco
Ventura, a solitary man in his fifties,
lives in the mountains of Calabria,
in southern Italy, with his herd
of goats, his horse and his dog.
Rocco produces a special typeof cheese
by a method handed down from his
family. The village's Mayor, Mr.
Spadafora, invades
Rocco's territory with his plan to
build a big tourist complex in the
mountains, together with enterpreneur
Bortolotti. The only obstacle is
that the land he wants to build on
belongs to Rocco, who, for obvious
reasons, does not want to sell the
land which belonged to his family
for a long time. Rocco now counts
on a big order of cheese from a French
chain of restaurants, which would
solve his financial problems. In
the middle of a fight with the Mayor,
Roberto, a child who recovers from
cancer and is in need of rest and
clean air, arrives in the village.
Roberto is the son of the Mayor's
brother, Ferdinando. He arrives with
his mother, Giulia, a pretty woman
in her thirties. Giulia, who is married
to the Mayor's brother Ferdinando,
tries to protect her son from from
emotional stress, which could impede
his recovery. Roberto meets Rocco
and is fascinated: To the child,
Rocco represents a mystery, with
his quiet but strong manner, but
above all, he represents the protecting
and assuring father figure, that
up to now, he has lacked. The child
quickly grows close to Rocco, who
shows him the fascination of the
mountains, the coves, the work on
his land. In return, Rocco becomes
attached to Roberto and
considers him to be like a son. Moreover,
Rocco becomes involved in a complicated
relationship with Giulia.
The situation comes to a head when
Rocco, to please Roberto, agrees
to sell the cheese made by the boy
at a village festivity. Bortolotti,
unknown to the Mayor, contaminates
the cheese... Rocco fights with
the mayor and is arrested while Roberto,
who is deeply disappointed, escapes
into the mountains... His life is
in danger! |
| Second
episode |
| When
Giulia discovers that Roberto has
disappeared, she asks Rocco for help.
Rocco believes to know where Roberto
is and promises to sell his land
to the enterpreneur in exchange for
his release from jail. After a long
search, Rocco finds Roberto and brings
him back to the village, but the
boy is in desperate need of medical
care. In the meantime, Giulia discovers
Rocco's past: Rocco has left the
country as a young man,
changed his life and worked in
international voluntary services.
The traumatic death of his wife and
child in Africa made him return to
Calabria, where he found himself
alone and with a mountain of debts,
left to him by his late parents.
Rocco tries desperately to put everything
in order and continues with his parent's
cheese production. It is his way
of trying to forget and to rectify
the mistakes he has made in his life.
But now, due to Bortolottis
actions, Rocco is in danger of
losing everything. Ferdinando,
who is now jealous of the special
relationship his son and mother
have with Rocco, takes his family
back to the city. But Rocco decides
to also fight for Roberto. Thanks
to the boy, who reminds him
of his lost son, he finds the
strength to put things into place:
He regains his license, gets the
EEC's approval for his cheese production
and destroys the enterpreneur's
plans, who just wanted to enrich
himself with the communitie's financings,
granted for the construction of
the tourist complex. Roberto and
Giulia leave the city to
aid Rocco. The whole village has
found Rocco to be a keeper of Calabrian
traditions. Giulia seems to still
be fascinated by Rocco but he convinces
her to reconcile with her husband
for the boy's sake. Thanks to Rocco,
Ferdinando understands the mistakes
he has made and promises to be
a good father and husband. Rocco
has won, but he is alone again
with his still open wounds. The
love of Dora, a fellow village
inhabitant, who for many years
has stood silently by his side,
will open new horizons for him. |
