In the footsteps of Trinity - by Valentin Slaby

Tuscany, Italy: Wednesday 29th October 2003, 8 o'clock in the morning. My father and I start our trip from Murlo to Camerata Nuova, a small village close to Monte Simbruini. The trip will be 268 km (167 miles) long - one way! Just before my vacation I learned about the location of the Trinity movie here on this website. I just had to visit this location in Camposecco!

We drove on Highway A1 and then took A24 East to Roviano. We left the Highway near Carsoli-Oricola. A map of the area Lazio, which we had bought during the trip, helped us to find our way to Camerata Nuova. Finally we arrived in the village. The main road ends right in front of a church. We asked people for the way to Camposecco and were told to go up the mountain just behind the village.

We were hungry but couldn't find a restaurant close by, so we bought some hot dogs and apples and drove up the paved road behind the store. The road is not paved all the way, in fact it was full of holes and huge gravel and stones. After a few minutes we had to give up because our car couldn't make it. We rolled back and parked the car. I wouldn't recommend driving up this road without a four-wheel drive and good insurance! So we decided to go on foot. We had no idea how long it would take to Camposecco. It started to rain and we finally found a sign telling us that we still had 3-4 km to go!

We kept on walking up the mountain. After a while we saw horses and donkeys. Finally I saw the "Trinity Valley", I still had the pictures from this website in my mind. I started to run around with my video camera and filmed the valley and hills. The rain didn't stop sadly and we didn't have much time, so my stay there was just 15 minutes long. We saw a sign warning people of bears and wolves in the area - interesting! I immediately felt better! For the way down we chose another route: A hiking route marked in white and red. We had to go through rough areas with bushes and stones and while we were climbing down, a thunderstorm surprised us. We were wet and full of mud and dirt but it was great!

Tips for everybody who wants to visit the Trinity location

1) By car: Make sure you are fully insured or take a four-wheel drive Jeep!
2) On foot: Take good shoes, a raincoat, rain cover for your camera, food and perseverance! (The walk up the mountain takes 1,5 - 2 hours)
3) Beware: There are bears, wolves and snakes in the area!
4) Don't count on many signs along the way!
5) Going down the mountain takes a long time, about 2/3 of the trip!
